Gut health refers to the balance of microorganisms or bacteria that live in the digestive tract. Looking after the health of the gut and maintaining the right balance of these microorganisms is vital for physical and mental health, immunity, and more. Gut health has become somewhat of a hot topic in recent years with more and more research and studies on the importance and effect on the rest of the body.

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative health (NCCIH) makes the point that we often think of bacteria as harmful “germs” — however, probiotic bacteria actually helps the body function properly.
PictureEssential Probiotics
Probiotics are type of live bacteria that line your digestive tract and support your body’s ability to absorb nutrients and fight infection. Today, however, because of refrigeration and agricultural practices much of our food contains little to no probiotics. Foods such as fermented vegetables, kimchi, kombucha, and sauerkraut naturally contain probiotics.

To boost the beneficial bacteria that reside in the gut, or probiotics, many people choose to take probiotic supplements.

Fiber, also known as roughage, is the indigestible part of plant foods that travels through our digestive system, absorbing water along the way and easing bowel movements. A very important part of our diet and fulfill roles throughout out entire body. However, the general American diet is lacking in the intake of dietary fiber. Due to refined and overly processed food, where the outer shell (bran) is removed, the fiber content is significantly lowered.

Digestive enzymes are also another important aspect of our digestive tract and they are produced by the microorganisms or bacteria to work with chemical reactions inside the body. Digestive enzymes aid in the typical breakdown of nutrients including proteins, fats, and carbohydrates in the food we eat everyday. More and more individuals are taking notice of digestive enzyme supplements to help with their body's normal breakdown.
