Vitamins are organic substances and considered essential micronutrients, along with minerals, fatty acids and amino acids.  Vitamins cannot be made in the human body with the exception of insufficient quantities of vitamin D and vitamin K and therefore must be obtained by in the diet.

Vitamins have diverse biochemical functions with each vitamin playing a specific role and are either classified as either water-soluble or fat-soluble.

There are 13 vitamins: vitamins A, C, D, E, K, and the B vitamins (thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, and folate).
